"I once dreamed of playing football professionally, and today my dream has come true. I have never loved football as much as I do now!" said Kasongo Jean-Pierre in excitement.
The whistle has just blown, marking the end of the second Zijin Mining COMMUS Cup community football tournament in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). On the winners podium, Kasongo proudly held up the championship trophy as his teammates cheered from their seats below. As the captain of the Gecamines community team, he felt an immense sense of pride.
People in the DRC, Africa's fourth most populous country, has a deep passion for football, but many play on muddy fields due to a lack of infrastructure. In late 2021, during a community visit, Zijin Mining's COMMUS subsidiary learned about this need and decided to organize the "Zijin Mining COMMUS Cup" tournaments and provide venues for the events.
In 2022, the first tournament drew eight teams and widespread attention. By 2023, the competition expanded with 12 contending teams. The third tournament began in May 2024 and featured 16 teams, with a total of 24 matches leading to the final before Christmas.
Future plans for the "Zijin Mining COMMUS Cup" include youth tournaments. "This area is fertile ground for football," said a local representative. The "Football in Schools" initiative aims to provide support for local youth, helping more youngsters achieve their football dreams.
According to the Community Project Task Agreement between COMMUS and the local communities, a modern sports field will be built, ending the practice of playing on muddy pitches.
Though Kasongo has missed the chance to become a professional player due to his age, he holds hope for his son. "My son loves football too. I hope he can fulfill my dream to become a professional player, and represent our country on the international stage."
Kasongo's journey with the COMMUS Cup highlights the community-driven efforts led by Zijin Mining to support local football, provide better facilities, and inspire future generations in the DRC.
