On June 4, FZU Zijin Hydrogen Power, a subsidiary of Zijin Mining, received approval to begin construction of China’s largest commercial hydrogen station, a 1,000 kg/day facility integrating ammonia-to-hydrogen conversion and refueling capabilities. This marks a key breakthrough in the company’s efforts to commercialize hydrogen energy across the entire supply chain—from production to end use.
Located in Lishui Town, Foshan, a key hydrogen energy hub in Guangdong Province, the project will employ ammonia decomposition technology to generate hydrogen on-site and refuel vehicles. With a daily hydrogen production capacity of 1,000 kilograms, the Tier-3 station covers 3,370 square meters and combines direct liquid ammonia supply with on-site hydrogen production. This innovative approach overcomes the traditional bottlenecks of hydrogen transport and storage and cuts hydrogen costs at refueling stations to approximately RMB 30/kg (US$ 4.2/kg)—roughly 50% lower than conventional high-pressure storage methods.
Scheduled to begin operations by September 2025, the station will significantly ease Foshan’s hydrogen shortage, refueling more than 1,000 hydrogen buses while serving planned future adoption—including 3,000 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, 40,000 hydrogen-powered bikes, and 2,100 commercial vehicles projected for the region. The project will accelerate hydrogen adoption in transportation, support hydrogen-powered mobility with refueling infrastructure, and provide a new model for the commercialization of hydrogen energy in China.
