On November 1, FZU Zijin Hydrogen Power, a subsidiary of Zijin Mining, completed the construction of China’s first commercial 1,000 kg/day ammonia-based hydrogen production and refueling station in the Nanhai District of Foshan, Guangdong Province. The largest facility of its kind in the country, the station is set to cut hydrogen costs by 40% compared to conventional production methods.

The station represents a breakthrough in the commercial application of ammonia-based hydrogen technology in China, creating a success story for clean energy production and consumption at scale.

By introducing its innovative model of direct liquid ammonia supply for on-site hydrogen production and immediate refueling, FZU Zijin addresses the key industry challenges of costly and inefficient hydrogen transport. This proprietary system eliminates the need for tube trailers, which are widely used by conventional refuel stations to ship hydrogen. Central to this breakthrough is FZU Zijin’s technology, which leverages specialized low-temperature catalysts, new reactor structures, and novel processes to maintain an ammonia decomposition rate of over 99.5% at temperatures below 480°C.

The company’s end-to-end technological solution for hydrogen production, storage, transport, and refueling reduces hydrogen costs for end-users by 40-50% compared to conventional methods. With a daily hydrogen production capacity of 1,000 kg, the station can meet the operational needs of up to 100 hydrogen-powered vehicles, effectively establishing a scalable model for ammonia-to-hydrogen conversion and turning the technological concept into a commercial reality.

The inauguration of the refueling station is a major step forward in implementing China’s hydrogen energy development plan and promoting green, low-carbon growth. The station is expected to set a new benchmark for the industry and provide a crucial basis for the large-scale commercialization of hydrogen energy in China.
