Advocate (Adv.) Vuyokazi Nontso is a qualified Mining Engineer and LLB graduate with 21 years of experience in the South African Mining industry. She was the second women ever to graduate in mining in the then Wits Technikon.
In 2002, Adv. Vuyokazi Nontso became the first black woman in South Africa to obtain a Mine Managers’ Certificate of Competency (Coal) before attaining her Mine Managers’ Certificate of Competency for Metalliferous Mines in 2011. She is one of only a handful of Mining professionals in South Africa who holds both Certificates.
She previously worked as the Principal Inspector of Mines in the Western Cape Region as well as a Regulatory Affairs Manager for Anglo American Platinum, ensuring legal compliance to legislation and licence/permit conditions.
In 2020, she joined Nkwe Platinum (SA) to lead the helm in overseeing regulatory affairs as the company’s Risk and Compliance Manager.
She is also currently completing her Masters in International Economic Law through UNISA, focusing on Protection of Foreign Direct Investment, International Trade and Regional Trade Areas among others.
Adding to her already prolific accomplishments, Adv. Vuyokazi Nontso also holds a black belt rank in Karate. She won silver while competing in Japan in 2009 and held the position as President of Goju Ryu Karate in Northern Cape from 2012 – 2013. In her spare time, she applies her skills to train children from disadvantaged backgrounds and enjoys taking them to tournaments in big towns and cities to expand their horizons.
On 31st August 2021, she participated as a panellist in “The Advancement of Women in Mining” webinar hosted by Mining News. She addressed the challenges facing women in the mining industry in South Africa.
